What We Do

Animal Welfare Services

We estimate that 198,000 working animals reside within BHA Egypt's operational areas
According to the equine census retrieved through our network in FY 2023/2024, in the following locations: Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Edfu, Marsa Matrouh, and Mansoura. Currently, BHA Egypt reaches approximately 12% of the equine population. We are actively working to expand our reach by extending our services to new areas.

These animals require rest, proper nutrition, and veterinary care. Our teams provide all of this, visiting communities to deliver treatment and share vital information about animal welfare. They ensure animals have access to adequate food, water, and shade.

Community & Owner Support

We empower communities to care for their animals through training and education programs. We train Community Health Workers, farriers, and saddlers to become Brooke advocates and qualified local service providers, ensuring accessible and affordable care.

Community Health Workers:
54 trained Community Health Workers provide frontline support, offering advice on equine health and husbandry, following up on veterinary care, and organizing community meetings.

Rural Guides:
143 educated women playing key roles in community development. They promote animal welfare messages, organize meetings, assist with Community Health Worker selection, identify new areas for mobile clinics, and help with data collection.

Adult Literacy Classes:
Since 2007, we have partnered with the government's Adult Illiteracy Eradication program, integrating animal welfare education into 200 literacy classes (averaging 10 students per class) across multiple regions. This innovative approach combines literacy with animal welfare education.

Reaching the Next Generation:
We engage children who work with animals, particularly in demanding environments. Through puppet shows, games, and other interactive methods, we teach children about animal care and encourage them to treat animals with kindness.

Veterinary Capacity Building

A cornerstone of Brooke Egypt's work is strengthening the skills and knowledge of individuals who directly impact the health and well-being of working equines. We achieve this through a comprehensive approach that encompasses various levels of training and engagement:

Building a Foundation of Animal Welfare: We begin by instilling a strong understanding of animal welfare principles through training based on the Five Freedoms. This foundational knowledge is crucial for everyone involved in equine care, from interns to animal owners.

Promoting Positive Equine Interaction: Understanding equine behaviour and employing correct handling techniques are essential for both the safety of handlers and the well-being of the animals. We provide in-depth training in this area to foster positive human-equine interactions.

Developing Skilled Veterinary Professionals: To ensure access to quality veterinary care, we invest in the development of future and current veterinary professionals through a tiered program. This includes:

Veterinary Basics: Providing foundational knowledge in areas like nutrition, health assessment, and basic care for veterinary students and new graduates.

General Veterinary Practice: Expanding the clinical skills of recent graduates and practitioners in areas such as pharmacology, diagnostics, and the management of common equine diseases.

Specialized Veterinary Expertise: Facilitating advanced training in specific equine health disciplines through partnerships with experienced specialists.

Equipping Local Health Providers: Recognizing the vital role of community-based care, we train local health providers and veterinary assistants in essential equine husbandry and first aid skills. This empowers them to provide immediate care and recognize when to seek veterinary intervention.

Enhancing Farrier Skills for Hoof Health: Proper hoof care is critical for the soundness of working equines. We provide training for local farriers, focusing on assessment, trimming, and basic shoeing techniques to improve hoof health within communities.

Supporting Responsible Harnessing Practices: Ill-fitting or poorly maintained tack can cause significant injury. We train local saddlers in the assessment, maintenance, and proper fitting of harnesses and saddles to prevent welfare issues.

Promoting Preventative Care through Grooming: We educate local hair clippers on the importance of this practice for working equines, covering techniques, timing, and hygiene to contribute to overall well-being.

Through these diverse initiatives, Brooke Egypt is building a network of knowledgeable individuals dedicated to improving the health and welfare of working equines across the country, ensuring a more sustainable and positive future for both the animals and the communities that depend on them.
