From April 1st, 2023 to March 31st, 2024,
the BHA-Egypt program worked tirelessly to provide medical assistance to working equines in Egypt. The team comprised 28 veterinarians, including seven clinic managers, who worked through a network of five static clinics, two office-based clinics, and 26 mobile clinic teams.
Through their dedicated efforts, the team managed to make 4,832 field visits to 171 communities across seven operational areas, reaching working equines in fourteen governorates, including Cairo, Giza, El Sharkia, Qalyubia, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Menoufia Alexandria, El-Behira, Damietta, Kafr El Sheikh, Matrouh, Luxor, Qena, and Aswan.
The team's efforts led to an outstanding record of 118,136 medical consultations, with a total of 161,851 treatments provided for different diseases. Furthermore, 1,554 animals were hospitalized, which amounted to 22,129 nights, with an impressive overall recovery rate of 87%. The team also performed 858 minor surgeries, responded to 81 emergency calls, and conducted 298 laboratory examinations. While the team's efforts were commendable, the program had to make some tough decisions, resulting in 447 animals being euthanized.
Despite this, the team's hard work and dedication made a significant impact on the welfare of working equines in Egypt.
BHA-Egypt conducted 63 awareness-raising and veterinary treatment campaigns in collaboration with GOVS, veterinary colleges, and veterinary syndicates. The campaigns were conducted in several areas inside and outside our coverage areas. It provided medical consultation to 4738 animals with a total of 6545 treatments. 2333 animal owners attended the educational sessions, and 694 harnesses were maintained. Additionally, 502 animal hooves were trimmed, and 237 new wooden saddles, 1689 noseband covers, 182 hoof picks, and 2 net meshes were distributed.

Our teams achieved 4.832 field visits to 177 communities across seven operational areas reaching working equines in fourteen governorates including Cairo, Giza, El Sharkia, Qalyubia, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Alexandria, El-Behira, Damietta, Kafr El Sheikh, Matrouh, Luxor, Qena, and Aswan.
Results; Based on the BHA - Egypt clinical recording system, there have been 122.292 medical consults. The total number of treatments was 165.733 for different diseases, and 1.302 animals were hospitalized with a total number of 21.275 nights and 86% overall recovery rate. 770 minor surgeries were performed, 306 laboratory examinations, and the team responded to 113 emergency calls, and 511 animals had to be euthanized.
In collaboration with the government organizations for veterinary services (GOVS), veterinary colleges, and veterinary syndicates, the field teams in our operational areas organized 39 awareness-raising and veterinary treatment campaigns in Dakahlia, Gharbia, Damietta, El Sharkia, Kafr El Sheikh, Portus & Arab Sabiha Cairo, Siwa, Matrouh, El kobania & El Selsela Aswan, Dishna, Qena, and Monsha Ammary &El-Baghdadi& Armant Luxor.
From April 2021 to March 2022,
we worked through 5 static clinics, two office-based, 26 mobile clinics, and 28 veterinarians including seven clinic managers. Our teams achieved 5.035 field visits to 177 communities across seven operational areas reaching working equines in eleven governorates including Cairo, Giza, Qalyubia, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Alexandria, El-Beheira, Matrouh, Luxor, Qena, and Aswan.
Based on BHA - Egypt clinical recording system, there have been 129.795 medical consults. The total number of treatments was 170.203 for different diseases, and 1.292 animals were hospitalized with total nights of 20.338 and an 88% overall recovery rate. 793 minor surgeries were performed and the team responded to 99 emergency calls, and overall 531 animals had to be euthanized.
In collaboration with the government organizations for veterinary services (GOVS), veterinary colleges, and veterinary syndicates, the field teams in our operational areas organized 55 awareness-raising and veterinary treatment campaigns in Dakahlia, Gharbia, Damietta, Portus & Arab Sabiha Cairo, El - Saloum, Matrouh, Maniha Aswan, Dishna, Qena, and Monsha Ammary Luxor. The total animal cases were
3.210 with a total treatment of 4.651. A total of 1.999 animal owners attended the educational sessions, 613 harnesses were maintained, and 384 noseband covers, 97 hoof picks and 15 net mesh were distributed. The governmental vets trained by Brooke vets were 292 at different government veterinary units.
